Who we are?
Unlocking the Potential of Emerging Media
Edgeworks is the full-service design, research, and production bureau housed in the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts. At Edgeworks, we pioneer "edge of field practice"—cultivating new possibilities at the boundaries of traditional disciplines. We partner with university researchers, community organizations, and global companies to create effective solutions to wicked problems. Like agricultural edge of field practitioners, we seek to establish regenerative relationships between the Center, the university, and our surrounding community by concentrating on innovation at the margins.
Our core competency is end-to-end design, research, and production across a range of established and emerging media. Services include: design research, systems design, scientific communication, hardware and software prototyping, immersive media design (AR, VR, XR, sound), media production, and human-computer and human-robot interaction (HCI, HRI). At Edgeworks, we understand the complex relationships between what is made and its users and audiences, and we use those relationships to unsettle centers of power and catalyze a more equitable world.
Edgeworks is a Core Research Facility of the University of Nebraska. Here at the Center, we are leading from the Edge.
About the Johnny Carson Center
The Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts is a multi-disciplinary Center of artists, technologists, world-builders, storytellers, and data scientists, we are specialists not only in framing the problems of research and development but also in the making that follows (think-do, think-make).
On Nov. 6, 2015, the University announced a $20 million gift from the Johnny Carson Foundation, the charitable arm of the late entertainment icon, to help create an academic program and facility focused on interdisciplinary learning, creativity, and research in emerging media.
